El Cabanyal was a separate municipality, the Poble Nou de la Mar, until 1897. Although the area shown on the attached map is known as Cabanyal, it consists of El Canyamelar and El Cabanyal proper (which includes the neighbourhoods of Llamosí and Cap de França). The village has a clear reticulated layout in which, under the streets perpendicular to the sea, run the old irrigation channels of El Riuet (F. Cubells), En Gasch (Mediterrani), Els Àngels / Pixavaques
(P. Ferrandis) and La Cadena (Tarongers)

For the past two decades El Cabanyal has been immersed in a conflict over the proposed extension of the Avenida Blasco Ibáñez, that intended to cut through the district until reaching the sea, demolishing 1,651 houses, many of them of great architectural and artistic value.
All indicates, however, that the future
of El Cabanyal lies, thanks to the tenacity
of its neighbours and the support of many Valencians, in an all-round restoration.
